InterSpiritual Meditation (ISM)
Online Course Orientation

Welcome to our Cohort for InterSpiritual Meditation!

We are very happy to be working with you during the coming weeks as we explore each of the seven steps of ISM and develop a personal meditation practice.  Our goal is to help you to cultivate a profound condition of good health, happiness, gratitude, transformation, love, mindfulness, wisdom and service to others.

Engage in the Website

Once you have completed your application and registration, you will set up your usernames and passwords for logging into the site. Then, please visit the website and begin to peruse the classes and the syllabus to get an idea of what to expect.  If you are having any difficulties, please be in touch and I will help you get properly connected.

It will be important for you to keep up with the reading assigned for each week.  (The reading assignments will not be heavy!)  If you haven’t gotten your books, please do so right away so you’ll be ready to go by our first day of class.  You’ll find a list of books at the website.

Journaling and Worksheets

Keeping a personal journal for each of the seven steps of the meditation will be a very important part of this experience.  If you don’t have one, I suggest that you get a journal that is dedicated to this meditation.  You will begin the journal during our time together, then keep working with it as you continue to cultivate a mature practice of meditation over the coming years.

Worksheets will help you to refine your meditative focus and methods for each step of the meditation.  These worksheets will be stored in your personal folder on Google Docs to make it easy to share with your mentor.

Verses, Videos and Questions

For each lesson on each step of the meditation you will find additional resources to help you develop your personal meditation and to record your insights in your worksheets.

  • Inspirational Verses from a variety of contemplative traditions.
  • Videos of contemporary teachers on themes relating to each of the seven steps.
  • Questions to help prompt your journaling and to develop your personal meditation.

Spiritual Styles and Questions Profile Tools

  • The Spiritual Styles Profile Tool will help you to honor and harness your archetypal styles for contemplative practice.
  • The Spiritual Questions Profile Tool will help you honor your deepest question then lightly embed it into the background of your mind before meditation.  The goal is not to force and answer, but to gently condition the mind such that an answer will appear.  This process accompanies your own independent exploration of relevant resources on line and in books, etc.

These tools are part of the separate Mandala Process Course in which we go more deeply into our archetypal styles and seek answers to each of our deepest questions.  They are introduced in this InterSpiritual Meditation course to help you develop the right meditation for you and to begin deepening and expanding your overall spiritual practices.

Weekly Teleconferences

The course will officially begin with our first video teleconference on Wednesday, February 1 at 5 pm PST.

Please join the meeting at least five minutes before 5 pm.  There are always a few challenges and glitches on the first day.  If you have trouble signing in, call the following number:

Support: 888.799.9666
Meeting ID: 563-221-992

We will be using a system called ZOOM.  Once you get started, you’ll find it easy to use.  Don’t be worried if there are a few connection glitches in the beginning.  You will be able to connect via computer, tablet or phone.  But a computer is best in a quiet place so you can really focus on the weekly session and can see your fellow students.

These weekly sessions will be recorded for later use if you are unable to attend.

Weekly Schedule and Class Format

Our first weekly teleconference are on Wednesdays at 5 – 6:30 pm  PST.  The first is on February 1. Thelast teleconference is on Wednesday, April 5.  I have sent out a PDF with our schedule.  Please keep this in a special folder on your computer for this class.  This schedule is also available on our course website.

Dyad Partners

As part of our course experience, each of you will work with a dyad partner that you can communicate with each week.  This mutually supportive relationship will help you expand and deepen the value of this course.  If you already have a partner in this class, please let me know who it is before our first teleconference when we will assign partners.

Time Commitment

The amount of time you invest in this course is totally your choice.  To get the most out of this opportunity, I suggest that you aim toward the following range.

Weekly Teleconference: 90 minutes
Daily Meditation: 20 minutes
Reading: 30 – 90 minutes
Journaling: 30 – 60 minutes
Dyad Partner Conversations: 30 – 60 minutes
Total: 200 – 320 minutes per week

It could be less if your schedule doesn’t permit more. Or, it could be substantially more if you maximize this opportunity to do extensive research and personal work on your journaling and meditation.   In either case, you’ll get a good taste for this work and can decide if you want to continue after the course is over.

Mentoring Opportunities

Joining us in this course is the cohort of InterSpiritual Mentors who have been training together and with Ed over the past few years.  To help you deepen your understanding experience, one of these mentors will be assigned to specific dyads in order to provide two brief guidance sessions if the dyad partners would like this support. Arrangements and scheduling for these will be made directly with the mentors. These sessions will be conducted via email, phone or Skype.

Additionally, if there are students who would like more extensive individualized mentoring, this can be arranged with one of our mentors. Please note that the standard fee is $85/hour and that we will do our best to adjust this fee according to each individual’s financial capacity. If you are interested, please check the availability of the mentor of your choice.

General Certificate of Completion.

All those who complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion. They will be strongly encouraged, but not required to write a capstone paper describing their own personal meditation and how it has affected their life. This paper will provide a baseline for each students continued personal development of ISM.

Certification to Continue in the Mentor Training Program

Those who wish to enter the Mentor Training Program will be required to complete a ten-page paper. This paper will include (1) an introduction, (2) a one-page description on how they are formulating each of the seven steps in their meditation, and (3) a conclusion on how this meditation is affecting their life and how they hope to apply it personally and professionally in the future.
